• college basketball poll on hold

Since there’s so much more data to deal with in college basketball than college football, the directed graphs are much larger, and it takes much more time to make the calculations necessary to generate my poll. Last week, I reached the threshold where it became no longer feasible to run the script on my little laptop. Consequently, the poll will be put on indefinite hold until I can find a more efficient algorithm and/or port the script to a faster language.

  • college basketball poll - week 5

Lots of movement, which is not surprising this early in the season. Yes, that’s Kansas State in the number one spot, not the Jayhawks.

A found a bug in my script where non-Division I games were getting counted. Massey’s .csv files give these teams ID “0”. It looks like my script had lumped all these team 0’s together and treated them as one, which caused way more connections between teams than there should have been. That’s been fixed.

    Take that, spammers!

  • i jumped the gun

D’oh – the Army/Navy game is this weekend, so the regular college football season is not yet over! I’ll release one more poll, because it could have some effect. For example, Iowa is just a nose above the Buckeyes right now. OSU beat Navy. So if the Midshipmen win (as they likely will), that could bump the Scarlet and Gray up a notch. We shall see!

Oh, and what’s the deal with spammers getting through my Turing test? Argh.
