college football poll - week 6

BYU comes in at #1, likely because as an independent, their opponents have come from multiple conferences. This gives them a larger pool of teams to possibly have “wins” against. Since many teams are playing conference-only schedules due to the coronavirus, this is a rarity.

Meanwhile, the SEC is climbing higher with the Tide and Dawgs reaching a tie for #5. They play each other next week, so it will be interesting to see how the next poll shakes out.

Miami and SMU pull into the top spot. It will be interesting to see how long the ACC and Sun Belt teams stay near at top once the SEC and Big Ten start playing in the coming weeks. The lack of many nonconference games will make this season very unusual. I’m wondering if the digraph will even be connected by season’s end?

Tulane and Memphis are tied for #2, as each has “half” of a win (Tulane beat South Alabama, who beat Southern Miss last week, and Memphis beat Arkansas State last week, and the Red Wolves went on to beat Kansas State this week…)

The Bayou Bengals leapfrog the Buckeyes to regain the #1 spot. The way the formula works, beating Georgia for the SEC crown helped LSU since they didn’t have a direct win over them yet, but a comeback win against Wisconsin in Indy did absolutely nothing for OSU since they’d already beaten the Badgers earlier in the season.
