  • college football poll - week 13

Thanks to COVID, a last-minute Colorado v. SDSU game was played on Saturday, merging the Pac-12 component of the graph in with the mega-component occupied the ACC, Big 12, and friends. The Buffs’ win was good enough for them to become the first Pac-12 team to break into the Top 25, to boot.

Not much change at the top, as #1 - 8 remain the same as last week.

  • college football poll - week 11

I don’t think anyone is going to touch BYU as long as they keep winning, at least until bowl season.

I did a little analyzing of the data, and there are currently six different components of our graph:

    • ACC, Big 12, and non-MAC G5 conferences. This component has 75 teams, which is why the poll is currently so skewed toward this group.
    • SEC
    • Big Ten
    • MAC
    • There are two Pac-12 groups! So far, the Arizona schools and USC have only played each other, so they’re still separated from the rest of the conference.

    1 - BYU (8-0) (17.563232421875)
    2 - Louisiana (7-1) (14.8857421875)

  • college football poll - week 9

The top few spots remain dominated by G5 teams who’ve actually had non-conference games. I’m guessing that it may be bowl season before we see any of the usual suspects rise to the top, although the winner of next week’s Clemson/Notre Dame game may have a shot.

Meanwhile, the Big Ten is slowly but surely rising after their second week of play. WINdiana leads the pack, currently at #30. Will any of them break through into the Top 25 next week?

Also, Pac-12 play begins next week. How long will it take for any of those teams to appear?

  • college football poll - week 8

BYU remains in the #1 spot. Interestingly, 4-1 Louisiana slides into second place. What’s up with that? Well, their one loss came to undefeated Coastal Carolina. And their four wins came against quality opponents spread over three conferences: Georgia Southern and Georgia State (Sun Belt), Iowa State (Big XII), and UAB (Conference USA). This season, non-conference games are a rarity that skews the results of the algorithm significantly.

Meanwhile, Big Ten play began yesterday as well. Currently, all of the 1-win B1G teams are tied for #34. It will be interesting watching some of them rise higher and higher as the season progresses.
